United States Practical Shooting Association

New Shooters

SPPL welcomes all persons interested in participating in the wonderful sport of practical pistol competition. We will do all we can to help you along. Feel free to come out and watch a match before you jump in and get your feet wet.

Junior shooters are absolutely welcome but we do ask that a parent or adult guardian accompany each junior shooter. The parent/guardian does not have to shoot but they do need to have the required safety gear (eye and ear protection).

SAFETY is #1
New shooters must be safety checked before competing (unless you have a USPSA safety card) Clinic begins at 0800 every match day. We will have a stage set up and helpers to instruct you with safety checks and match rules at no cost. If possible, please let us know you are coming for the clinic ahead of time so we can be adequately staffed. If you need to borrow a gun, extra magazines, ammo or other equipment, contact Bill Sahlberg at least the day BEFORE the match at 509.924.7230.

Most clubs shoot rain or shine and SPPL is generally no exception. Be sure to dress for the weather conditions expected for match day. The weather at the range can change rapidly so if there is any chance of precipitation at least have your foul weather gear in the car.

Other Resources

The United States Practical Shooting Association website has an interesting series of introductory articles that will be of interest to the new shooter. And while you are at the USPSA website, be sure and join USPSA. Only USPSA members can become classified and all USPSA members recieve Front Sight Magazine which is one of the premier shooting publications out there.

One of the most comprehensive online resources is the Brian Enos Forums. These forums are inhabited by shooters of every level from novice to grand master. Got a question? Search the forum and you can probably find the answers you seek. If not, feel free to ask and you will surely get an answer. And don't be surprised if that answer comes from a name you recognize from shooting magazines and TV coverage of shooting events! Rob Leatham, Matt Burkett and many other "household names" from the shooting sports prowl Brian's forums as do well known gun writers like Patrick Sweeney, Guy Neill, Michael Bane, and Duane Thomas.
